How We Started ? “ Quality Health Care to All in Christian Charity”

“The great hospitals will always put the patient and the patient’s family first, and the really great institutions will provide care with warmth, compassion and dignity for the individual.”

N.M.Wadia Hospital was started by missionaries of the Church of Scotland on June 27th, 1912.Unique to its establishment was that the original funding of the purchase of the land came from 3 sources — the Church of Scotland, the erstwhile state of Bombay and the N.M.Wadia Charities.
The first team of doctors was Dr. Williams from Scotland and an Indian Dr. D. K, Gorey. After their retirement Dr. G. K. Gokhale took over, as head of the hospital in 1944. These were the pioneers that worked tirelessly to establish the medical work in the area.
In 1967, Dr. Winifred Bailey succeeded Dr. Gokhale and pioneered the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She is remembered even today for her discipline, sincerity & hard work. In 1968 Dr. RK. Kolhatkar was appointed as Medical Superintendent and Chief of Surgery. Apart from his excellent surgical skills he transformed the hospital into a multi — disciplinary institute by appointing several consultants in different specialities. He was invited to be the Director of Miraj Medical Centre in 1973. However after his tenure at Miraj he again joined Wadia Hospital as Honorary Surgeon from 1984 – 1989. In 1971 the Poona Christian Medical Association was formed to which was entrusted the management of N.M.Wadia Hospital and Jalna Mission Hospital.
Mr. Ian Coltart a financial expert was the Superintendent from 1973 to 1984. It was during his tenure in 1977 that the new building was built & inaugurated by Shri Vasantdada Patil the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Later Dr. C. S. Levi, a surgeon along with his wife Dr. Shalini Levi, a Bynecologist joined the hospital and Dr, Levi was appointed as the Medical Superintendent. Just as they were settling down to this important responsibility, Dr. Levi died suddenly in September 1984, Dr. C.B. Shrisundar a chest physician established the T.B. ward and was medical coordinator from 1973 to 1984. He was then appointed Medical Superintendent from 1984 to 1986,
Another couple Dr. Susheel Rahator a Physician and Dr. Mrs. Usha an anesthesiologist joined Wadia Hospital in 1976. Dr. Rahator took over the reins of the hospital in 1986 until 1999. He continues to be the chief Physician and Medical Superintendent till 1999. He has remained faithful to this institution through some of its most tough and testing times in the last 3 decades
Dr. Timothy Jonas from 1999 to 2001 and Major General Dr.S. Biswas (Rtd.) from 2001 to 2003 provided leadership during these difficult times and made sincere efforts to pull out the hospital from a situation of crisis. The Intensive Coronary Care Unit was established in 2000. Part of the equipment was through a matching fund from the Rotary Club of Pune East with assistance from Rotary Club of Monterey, Dist. California, U.S.A.
The mantle of the leadership in May 2004 fell on the shoulder Dr.Nitin Joseph, former head of the Burns & Plastic Surgery at Wanless Hospital, Miraj.
We have a School of Nursing that conducts the 3 years GNM course recognised by the Indian Nursing Council, With the growing competition in the vicinity and problems of finances and personnel from within, we were trying our best to re-establish glorious the reputation that the hospital has had in the past. The financial crunch was growing day by day and to overcome the situation we were in looking forward for a Joint Venture with the same medical goals.
On 27th March 2002, St. Andrews’s International Academy were introduced in the vicinity of N.M.Wadia Hospital to run their Medical Courses. On 1st March 2006 meeting held in Jalna, Mr.David Koil Pillai was appointed as a Chairman of N.M.Wadia Hospital. He gave a proposal to Poona Christian Medical Assocation for a Joint Arrangement and Revival of N.M.Wadia Hospital alongwith St. Andrew’s Education Foundation.
To revitalize and revive the N.M.Wadia Hospital, the arrangement was successfully incorporated from Oct’2008 with Transworld Education Academy Pvt Ltd.
In April’2018 N.M.Wadia Hospital underwent an agreement with Transworld Healthcare Pvt Ltd for the revitalization of N.M.Wadia Hospital.
